About Us

A Brief HistoryIn 2005 Greg Shepherd was called to be on staff of a church plant in the Wesley Chapel area of Florida. In 2006 Greg was burdened by the overall direction of family values in the United States. The formation of a ministry designed to come alongside churches to help strengthen the family started to take form.In July of 2006 he led a team to Haiti from the church and God radically changed his life once again. Immediately after his return the 501 (c) (3) non-profit Florida Synergy was incorporated. That is where his heart for the family had a straight-on collision with his heart for the people of Haiti.Through prayer, discussions, and the leading of the Holy Spirit it was clear that God was giving him a vision to incorporate both. Through God’s providence, Greg teamed up with nationally known speaker and author on men’s leadership and ministries Steve Farrar. Florida Synergy managed and marketed five men’s conferences around the state of Florida seeing God do an amazing work in thousands of men who attended these events.By the end of 2008, Greg found himself drawn further and more often to Haiti. Florida Synergy had already developed its ministry the Love Haiti Missions Project which quickly became a respected ministry of the Haitian people by God’s grace.Love Haiti Missions Project was one of the first organizations in Haiti immediately following the earthquake in 2010 delivering over 20,000 pounds of food and supplies to people desperately seeking food and water. Love Haiti Missions Project Disaster Relief led 10 different teams to Haiti that year offering construction, medical, physiological, food, and housing services.Love Haiti Missions Project quickly realized that the single most important resource being overlooked was the children of Haiti. We believe that for sustainable long term change in haiti we must reach the children and educate them.Today Love Haiti Missions Project's heart and calling is to reach the next generations for christ with an emphasis on orphaned and abandoned children. Educate them, disciple them, love them, and encourage them as they become all God intended them to be.Since the launch of Florida Synergy and Love Haiti Missions Project, God has connected the ministry with an overwhelming amount of individuals who continue to guide, counsel, teach, and encourage our calling to reach, teach, and send individuals to engage their world for Christ.Our PhilosophyLove Haiti Missions Project works with the church and through the church both locally and globally. We do not compete with the church, we lift up the church. Our desire is to be an extension of the church's discipleship process.We strive to offer economical opportunities for more individuals to experience short-term mission trips. All of our projects are in association with Haiti churches so that the church is lifted up in their communities. Are calling is to offer additional discipelship opportunities to the church locally and globally as we partner to live out the great commission.Our goal is to not only help with the disciple making process, but to teach and encourage those disciples to be disciple makers, and those to be disciple maker makers.Our PurposeActs 1:8But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”Matthew 28 :19-20And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Greg Shepherd founded Florida Synergy, Inc. which now operates as RTS missions in August 2006. Since that time, God has done a remarkable work within the life of the ministry.He is responsible for the overall direction of the ministry's local and global discipleship initiatives including Love Haiti Missions Project. He has been the associate pastor at two SBC churches, a field representative for Florida Men of Integrity, and an Area Ambassador for Promise Keepers.Before he and his family stepped out in faith as fulltime missionaries, Greg was the Manager of Grassroots Development for the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the largest and most respected pro-business lobbying organization.Greg and his amazing wife Maria have a wonderful son named Caleb and live in Land O Lakes, FL.

Christopher Day | Director, Field Operations

Chris is a Haiti Team leader and handles the logistics for our teams in the field. He lives in Madison, FL where he just finished at Taylor Technical Institute for Industrial Engineering. He is continuing his education at FSU/FAMU College of Engineering where he is working on a degree in Constructional Engineering.Chris is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting and fishing. He enjoys a game of golf too keeping a 12 handicap.Chris says, "On my first trip to Les Cayes God wrecked my world. I decided to hold nothing back from that point." Since that trip Chris has been to Jeremy, Jacmel, St. Marc, Port au Prince and every place in-between.Chris speaks very good Creole, and he expects to be fluent very soon. Chris and his gorlfriend Caitlin are both in love with Haiti, and feel God might be calling them to Haiti fulltime in the future. Haiti has made an enormous impact in their lives. Chris said, "I hope that when my life is over here, that the people we serve realize that Jesus loves them and they accept that relationship, that's all that matters. That's what it is all about, revealing the free gift God has given to us."

Tony Diaz | Director, Ministry Operations

Anthony “Tony” Diaz was born in Vineland, NJ on February 27, 1959 but was raised on the island of Puerto Rico. There he attended school including 4 years at the American Military Academy, an ROTC sanctioned school. In 1975, the family moved to Delaware where Tony graduated high school and attended college in 1977 at the University of Delaware. The family made one more move in 1979 to Tampa, FL where Tony then attended the University of South Florida until 1982. In 1980, he met his one true love, Nena, and they were married in 1983 and blessed with two Sons, Brandon and Jordan Diaz. Brandon lives in Tampa, FL and Jordan is a Senior at Boston University expected to graduate in May 2012. Tony and Nena were blessed once again in December 2009 with the birth of a beautiful Grandson. In 1985 Tony established Superior Travel Center, a retail travel agency and a few years later, Superior Tours a wholesale travel and tour subsidiary which he successfully operated for 25 years. The most important day in Tony’s life was his spiritual birthday which occurred on Sunday, November 9th of 2008 at 4:30 a.m. On that day, Tony was born again and his life has been completely transformed from that moment on. Tony cherishes every day as the Lord guides him into this great adventure and his spiritual growth. The Lord Almighty continues to be a blessing that will endure for eternity. About HaitiOnly 700 miles off the coast of Florida, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the third hungriest country in the world. 80% of the population lives below the level of absolute poverty. One out of 8 children will not live to see their 5th birthday. Malnutrition strikes 3 out of 4 children. Malnutrition, respiratory infection and diarrhea are the leading causes of childhood death.Less than half of the population has access to health care. There are 3,970 babies born infected with the HIV virus each year, over 11 each day. The average life expectancy is age 50. Recent statistics put the unemployment rate at 70%. Currently, according to UNICEF and the US Agency for International Development, there are 143 Million orphans globally. Every day 5,760 more children become orphans. There are over 300,000 child slaves in Haiti and an estimated 500,000 orphans. The median age in Haiti is 18 years, meaning that 50% of the population is children, and roughly 8% of those children are without parents. Poverty• Gross national income per capita is US$520, about half the total for Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Americas • 78% of Haitians are poor (less than US$2 a day), and more than half (54%) live in extreme poverty (less than US$1 a day). • In rural areas, poverty and extreme poverty rates are estimated to be 84% and 69% respectively. • Over two-thirds of the labor force do not have formal jobs. • Life expectancy is 61 years. •Half of children under 5 are malnourished. • Over 7% of children die at birth. • For every 100,000 births, 523 women died in Haiti, compared to eight maternal deaths for every 100,000 births in Europe. • 80 out of 1,000 Haitian children never see their first birthdayEducationEnrollment:• 50% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school.• One-third of girls over six never go to school. • More than 50% of children attending school are overaged. Retention:• Approximately 30% of children attending primary school will not make it to third grade; 60% will abandon school before sixth grade.Quality:• Less than 40% of non-public schools are accredited. • Only 15% of teachers at the primary level have basic teacher qualifications (including university degrees), and nearly 25% have never even attended secondary school. • Approximately 75% of all teachers lack adequate training; many have just a 9th grade or 12th grade education, with no teacher training at all. • Less than 20% of schools have electricity; 39% have potable water; 15% have a library.Cost:• Public education represents less than 20% of enrollment, and less than 10% of schools, at the primary level. • Estimated annual school costs average US$131 per child (including uniform, books/materials and transportation).Literacy:• 37.9% of the population is unable to read or write, as compared to only 12% illiteracy in the rest of Latin America.Orphan Statistics (Haiti)• In Haiti alone, there are more than 490,000 orphans. • In addition, 300,000 children are in slavery. • One in seven children in Haiti dies before their 5th birthday - mostly of preventable diseases• 60% of Haitian children do not have access to the most basic medical care.• 25% of infants suffer from low birth weight. Sometimes it is fatal. • 24% of children suffer from stunted growth as a result of malnutrition. • Roughly 46% of children are not vaccinated against polio and measles. • Nearly half of the population of Haiti are children under the age of 18 years.• 48% of the adult population is illiterate.• 200,000 orphaned Haitian children live in institutions (the rest are fostered, live with relatives, or are street children).• Child-headed households are becoming more common as potential guardians succumb to AIDS or other causes of death• 9.71% of children die before or during birth.• Every year, over 5000 babies are born infected with HIV.

Projects

Of the about 50% of children that are able to attend school, less than half of these complete primary school. Two-thirds of teachers do not have professional or academic qualifications and many have not even completed high school.

ConstructionIn the two areas we serve as well as the rest of Haiti, the need for construction is great. Love Haiti Missions Project has access to and the opportunity to serve over 500 churches through out the region.Because the cost of public school is so expensive, the church tries to double as a school in some areas to give kids the opportunity of an education. Most churches themselves are not finished and only have walls, or even just tarps as walls making it very difficult to have church or school in the elements.There is a tremendous need for teams to help our ministry in the construction of churches, roofs, schools, children homes, etc...If your group, church, or organization would like to put a construction team together we can deliver the project.

Child EvangelismOne thing Haiti is not short of is children. With 50% of the population being under the age of 18, there is a beautiful opportunity to reach the next generations for Christ and educate them. We feel this is the single most importat opportunity to creat long term sustainable change for Haiti.With over 400 kids attending our Vacation Bible Schools everyday, this can be one of the most exciting and challenging trips your group can be part of. Everyday consists of Bible Teaching and storying, crafts, and recreation. We also make sure that every person within our reach of the VBS is fed physically as well as spiritually.If you have a group that loves working with kids you will not want to miss the blessing of this opportunity. EducationLove Haiti Missions Project believes this to be the single most important issue in Haiti. When you live on less than $1 a day it is impossible to attend school. Most children can not afford the average cost of $131 to attend primary school. Churches are doubling as schools in an effort to allow some children to experience the blessing of education.Kids all over Haiti desire to go to school, not only do they believe it will help them in the future as they become adults, but most schools are a safe haven for children part of the day. If they are lucky they will get a meal too.We are in need of so much help in this area. Churches find it very difficult to pay teachers their $40 a month salary so they leave and look for money somewhere else. His HouseAt the very heart of Love Haiti Missions Project are the children of Haiti. We desire to reach every child, but with an emphasis on orphanaed and abandoned children keeping with James 1:27.Before the earthquake it was estimated that Haiti alone had over 490,000 orphans. We believe that number to be very conservative. That number does not take into account the additional 300,000 in child slavery. We believe that 100,000 can be added to those numbers after the earthquake.His House, Kay Li in Creole is our children's home program. Our heart is to offer a safe haven to these children. One in which they can feel safe, have a roof over their head, heal their malnourishemnt, expeience love, education, responsibility, and Christ.Our goal is to continue offering these homes throughout Haiti as God leads. Through the generous gifts of support these kids will have a home, Christian education, food, clean water, and medical attention.

Pastor Albert is the Director of Missions for the Artibonite Association. He oversees the continued growth, formation, and pastoral leadership for over 230 churches in his association. Pastor Albert has been an important part of our ministry fom the begining. He is highly respected all over his region and is a great man of God who loves the people of his country more than anyone we have seen.

Yvesner Sylla | Missions Team Operations

Sylla is the logistics guru for all of our teams traveling to Artibonite. He makes sure that everything is taken care of from the time we arrive in Port au Prince to the time he drops us off at the airport when we leave. He makes sure that we have drivers, translators, security, water, and everything else available during the week of every trip. He is an amazing man of God and recently married. Sylla has been with us from the beginning and is a much trusted and vital member of our team.

Pastor Michel | Director of Missions

Pastor Michel is the Director of Missions for the Central Association. He oversees the continued growth, formation, and pastoral leadership for over 130 churches in his association. Pastor Michel has been a friend of the ministry since the begining. He is a mighty man of God with a deep conviction and loyalty to the people of Haiti.

Christmas in HaitiThis Christmas let’s share the reason for the season with children who desperately need to know that people love them and care for them. As we celebrate the Hope which came from our Savior’s birth, let us reach out and share this Hope with the precious children of Haiti by participating in our first annual Christmas in Haiti. Simply fill a gallon freezer zipper bag with items listed below, and put a smile on the face and hope in the heart of a child in Haiti. Tips for Filling Your Freezer Bags: Decide whether your gift bag will be for a boy or a girl and choose an age category (2-4; 5-7; 8-12). Please indicate on the bag what age group. Gather small toys and gifts to fill your bag (see suggestions listed below). Use a new gallon size zipper bag and make sure that you label your freezer bag for a boy or girl. Optional: Decorate the outside of the bag with markers or stickers. You can also enclose a note and a photo of yourself or your family for the child that will receive the freezer bag. Include $5 (five dollars) in your bag to cover shipping. Do not staple or tape shut you bag. Please simply close it, so our team can access the shipping amount. If there be any access shipping funds, it will be used to purchase food and clean water for the children of Haiti. Orphan Sunday Orphan SundayNovember is Orphan Month. Organizations will be coming together all month to unify their voice for the fatherless. Our event day will be Sunday November 27, 2011.On Orphan Sunday, Christians and Humanitarians stand for the orphan. We are a people called to defend the fatherless…, to care for the child that has no family, and …to visit orphans in their distress.Each event is locally-led. Churches, small groups, companies, non-profits, prayer gatherings, and families— each rousing believers with God’s call to care for the orphan, and what we can do in response.From many sources, one voice. On November 27th, thousands of events echo across America and around the globe, all sharing a single goal: that God’s great love for the orphan will find echo in our lives as well.What is Orphan Sunday?On Orphan Sunday, Christian and Humanitarians across America and beyond celebrate the love of the God who “places the lonely in families” and calls us to do the same. Why Orphan Sunday?God is vested, deeply and personally, in the plight of the orphan. He calls His people to share His passion and to bring each child the love of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. Support SupportGiving Through Prayer Prayer is the greater work in the Kingdom of God. We are not large, nor strong, nor wise. We exist by the gracious hand of our Master. We depend upon you praying more than any other benefit you may give. Our greatest desire is that you continue to lift us up to the Father in the Name of the Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit.Giving through undesignated financial support.All undesignated giving is contributed to our general fund and is used to the glory of God for the advancement of His Kingdom. The General Fund is the backbone of Love Haiti Missions Project and is our top prayer priority. Apart from these needs being met we cannot function. All donations given to the General Fund go to the following:• Love Haiti Missions Project: This is our primary global ministry and the highest percentage of all giving goes directly to our programs in Haiti. The great majority of our work is reaching orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti. We have made a specific commitment to provide for their support, and they depend upon us monthly. While a supporter may recommend an amount for a specific area, we ask that they respect our strict adherence to established support amounts. Support received which is surplus to established commitments will be returned to the General Fund.• Global Staff Support: We are committed to support those called by God to help us run our programs in Haiti. Although are programs have expanded greatly over the past few years, we have sought to keep our Global staff expenses to a minimum.• Administration: It is our desire to glorify God by keeping all administrative costs to a bare minimum.Giving through designated giving to a specific ministryAfter much deliberation and prayer, we have determined that while it is not in keeping with the Scriptures to prod or manipulate our brothers for funds, it is neither proper to hide the valid needs of others from sincere inquirers. For this reason, we will seek to make valid needs known. The needs have been validated by our U.S. and Global staff and all donations given toward any selected need will go directly to it. These needs vary greatly:• Church Construction. Many churches in Haiti battle the elements due to unfinished construction. Churches double as schools in most areas and it can be very difficult holding services and school when the elements are pounding. We are commited to helping by providing funds to assist churches in their construction needs. • Bibles and sound Christian Literature. Many believers in Haiti do not have a Bible, and many pastors have never had the privilege of studying in a Bible institute or seminary. They are further limited by their own poverty from having an adequate library to use as a resource in studying Scripture. For this reason, Love Haiti Missions Project seeks to provide Bibles and other discipleship tools to believers and Pastors.• Evangelistic Tools. The mission work of our teams in Haiti are often limited by the lack of proper tools. We provide these necessary tools so that the missionaries and staff might fulfill the work to which the Lord has called them. Such as: Bicycles, trucks, vans, mopeds, and mules to reach others with the Gospel in rural areas.
